Time Off and How I Found Beauty in Houston

Time Off and How I Found Beauty in Houston

Italy takes the month of August off. Time off, a concept that barely exists in America.

Summer sparks a wandering spirit inside of me. Maybe it’s because the warmer weather energizes the need for movement and adventure or maybe it’s due to education system repeatedly releasing me to freedom during this time so that now, not so deep in my subconscious, I equate Summertime with running free of restrictions and schedules. Probably a mix of both but the reason doesn’t negate the fact that Summer dwindles the desire to pound the pavement and inspires the wanderlust.

But exploration doesn’t need to start on a tropical island or miles away. When I first came across this suspension bridge, I was out scouting locations with a friend. I was so surprised to find it! It’s the entryway to a historic house here in Houston. As we walked across it I was reminded of those beautiful suspension bridge images captured in Japan or Thailand.

For so long I thought that, while Houston was a great city to work and live in, with the nicest people and the best food, I found it offered little in the aesthetic inspirations. I was frustrated to step outside and not have the towering urban jungle of NYC as my backdrop or the stunning island/ coastal settings of Australia. Desiring more for my content as a blogger led me to explore more with this particular intention of discovering beauty where I was convinced there wasn’t much.

This journey led me to find some of the best locations in Houston. Sometimes these beautiful locations are fleeting, like a giant flower wall that dies after one week of being in bloom and sometimes they are long-standing places right under our noses like the entryway to the Bayou Bend Collections and Gardens pictured here. This journey that started off as finding more interesting spots for my content has led to something bigger, sharing with everyone the beauty there is to be found in Houston. I plan on discovering more as I have barely unearthed much, and I encourage you to do the same this summer and wander in your own backyard as well as the worlds.
